Hyderabadi biriyani
aah.. finally the finest hyderabadi biriyani at Bangalore.. when i heard this from my friend, i was not too much excited, as in past, i was not fully satisfied with all those tall promises and claims people made..
But this time, i was not let down.. Hyderabadi Biriyani is the name of the place, on airport road, proved to be a place which deserves the name.
The only complaint i have about the biriyani served here is, its a bit greasy, a little over dose of ghee. I don't think a real biriyani buff wont bother much about this, unless he is a real fitness freak.
The other issue with this place is parking space, u have to roam all around to park ur vehicle, but, u wont regret that for the splendid biriyani they serve :)

Brahmin's Coffee Bar
Heard a lot about this place from acquaintances, It is one of the oldest eat joint in Bangalore.
It’s a very small place, one needs to pay for whatever they want to eat at the counter which is almost on the footpath, sneak in and place the order.
The idlies and the vadas are dipped in the chutney…. Believe me, many people, like me, go for the second and the third servings of chutney. To avoid the rush and the spillover of chutney, there’s a different counter outside, where this man, serves only chutney. This helps you to avoid the need to fight Brahmin's Battle to get your second filling. ;)
They put carrot gravings in vada, which makes the vada more crispier
Standing relaxed by the roadside and sipping the hot and fresh filter coffee, after idlies, kharabaths and vadas.. man.. Its an amazing way to end the meal with satisfaction.
People who want to try this super soft idlies, need to be there before 12 in the noon, between 3-7 in the evening and definitely not on Sundays as they remain closed (thats a very bad part here)

Halli Thindi @ Bull Temple road
If u are fed up with all those masala doasa and filter kapis from dharsinis and sagars in Bangalore, still have an appetite to taste the traditional karanataka cuisines, then try 'Halli Thindi'.
This is a small food joint in near bull temple, basavangudi. They serve all the rural flavours of karnataka : ragi-roti, mangalore bajji, godambi dosa, mangalore idly, sukkina unde, sajjappa.. sound weird!!.. dont decide with the names, each one are really yummy rural dishes..
My personal favorite here is akki-roti (rice roti) and mangalore idly. Akki roti is at is best here, it just melts in to the food pipe along with the butter. Mangalore idly is similar to regular idly but shaped like a 'cup' garnished with coconut oil.
Even the regular rice bath is faboulous here. they have an array of un heard desserts, like 'sajjappa', sukkina unde, 'kobre unde' along with the laddoos and the very own kesari bath.
They have lot of items in their menu, yet to be tried by me.. but every time the sajjipa and their mangalore bajji's never let me discover something new :)
This is a great place for having a fabulous south indian breakfast or for a quick and yummy snack by evening.
I see lot ppl from distant places like jp nagar, btm.. flock here to revive their rural appetite.. of course also to have a dip with their own nostalgias
i just forget to mentions something.. 'halli' means 'village' in kannada.

Hotel Prasanth @ Gandhi Bazaar
Are u a non-veggie, are u fed up with all those butter-sixtyfive-manchurian chicken dishes served with thick flour pastes, u r looking for some place where u feed ur self with a traditional liver fry, poti (intestine - குடல்), thala maamisa (தலக்கறி), naati fry (நாட்டுகோழி ப்ரை) stuff.. here u go.. just step in to Prasanth Hotel in gandhibazaar. In the midst of Basvanagudi, with all those fruits/vegetable shops and silk Saree showrooms, is this small clean no frills non-veg hotel. Hotel Prasanth.
you never get any fired rice, macnhurians, chicken 65, naans, kulchas'.. nothing.. just ragimudge, chappati, biriyani and plain rice.. thats it.. the main course menu stops here. :)
I have learnt the ragimudge they serve here tastes heavenly along with nati-kuruma ( Country chicken gravy). Im not a ardent fan of ragi, i have tried it couple of times and had some bad experiences, with my inability to eat it without the mudge getting stuck to my tooth. My north kannadiga friend nearly dives in to the plate once it is served and even he cudnt teach me the expertise way of having ragi-mudge.. so. i nver try it afterwards (these grapes are sour).
I usually start with a couple of chappatis (a decent ones.. no maida, full wheat). The side dish varies with the mood it may be either the plummy liver fry, the spicy poti fry or at times a plain chicken fry. they also serve a good anjal fish fry, though it dont go well with chappati's.
After those chappatis, its the turn of rice.. dont ever spend a second to choose between the mutton/chicken/nati biryani from the menu.. they serve the same rice, with just mixing 3-4 pieces of flesh as per ur choice, so better settle with 'jeera rice' the same biriyani rice without any flesh/bone in it.
The last part is more interesting one in having a complete non veg feast, the piping hot rasam, which they serve as 'complimentary drink'. Its a cute way to finish ur spicy lunch/dinner.
The very peculiar attitude of the waiters i observe here, in this place, similar to that one of those waiters from Velumilitary and amma mess in chennai, they never bring the bill to your table unless the plates are cleared. u finish ur meal, wipe out ur hands in the finger bowl and sit relax with the tooth pick, then arrives the bill, which to ur astonishment is very very low, at least to bangalore's standards. I really love this part, unless u dine in a posh restaurants, it may be those nandhinis/nandhanas or sagars the wiaters use to bug u with 'next sir!' type of questions and once u say 'u r done' they immd flash the bills, even before u finish ur meal. I luv this place for this attitude more than its food :)
mm.. keep in mind, there is one new eatery jsut a couple of building next to this place, which is named 'New Prasanth Hotel', dont ever bother to step in to that place.. its no where near to 'Prasanth Hotel' s standards. there is some mockery going on ter.. i have been fooled once, by trying them. beware!
This place is in the I floor above the silk showroom, they have a very clearn familroom too in the second floor !!

ClayPot @ Maruthi Nagar
Madiwala area in Bangalore is bachelor heaven, one can find lot of small, cheap, tasty, diverse - all Tamil, kerala, andhra, bengali, orissa, punjabi - eateries there. Mostly every thing is flocked with the IT bachelors.
One of those for keralite speciality cuisine is Claypot - i still wonder why most of the mallu restaurants have a stylish english names in contrast to tamil or andhra eateries which are usually named as 'bhavan/mess'. Ok. let the name may be in English or Latin.. we dont give a damn care abt that.. until our taste buds are happy. :)
Clay Pot os a real real small restaurant in the mid of maruthi nagar layout. The parattos they server are great, the real kerala paratoota swinged in air, to give a smooth finishing :). They are really 'spongy'.. so soft.. The first thing that makes you refreshing is that mild warm 'jeeraga vellam', Man!! after struggling the day with chai's from vending machines and smoke filled signals you come and sit here, just have a sip of warm jeeraga vellam.. you are all set to treat your taste buds and fill your belly without burning your wallet.
The Chemmeen roast - prawn roast - they make is delicious, as it arrives to your table the aroma of coconut oil spreads in air along with the masalas, I bet no soul on the earth - who likes mallu food - can complain about ClapyPot. The very traditional karimeen pollichchattu is at its best here.
I started with parottas and chemmen roast, gulped them almost like a starving dog :), then i ordered for couple of appams with kerala chicken curry.. that was a meal from heaven. For all these heavenly made dishes -for two- it was some 175 bucks.. JUST 175 bucks.. @ a cost of a redubull boss..
The appams wer good, but the porratos with chemmen roast made my day. If you are a veggie, you have a option of 'kadalai curry' - chenna or kerala veg curry too.
Really a cool place to have ur daily dinner, ofcourse if you luv kerala cusine. :)

Kamat - bugle rock
If u long for real north karnataka veg food and jowar rotis, the best place in south banalore is Kamat - bugle rock. They do serve north indian and chinese, but north karanataka food is at its best here. The whole second floor is reserved for that. There is a stage where classical music concers are held, which can accomadate a decent 30+ ppl, mostly who waits for the turns to get a table. :)
Jowar meals is the speciality here. they are served in plantain leaves. As u enter the place, u'll be recieved by a ever smiling hostess in a traditional silk saree.. cool hostess in hi-fi bangalore. The waiters are ver friendly.
Meals is served course after course, they start with Jowar rotis, yennegai and a brinjal curry, accompanied by salads, raitas and palya. Main course comes with white rice (karnataka ponni) drumstick sambhar and rasam. Not like other unlimited meals serving places, here the waiter keep an eye on ur table and refill everything in a astonishing pace :).
spl. meals comes with some extra dessers usually a holige, bajji குடைமிளகாய் பஜ்ஜி and to windup we have fruit salad with ice cream. then comes banana and paan in very traditional style. damn! u feel like heaven after having a full stomach, on a lazy afternoon.
The place is in Basavanagudi, just diagonally opposite to BMS engg college, next to Bull temple.
Dont ever take your date here.. tis is a place for lazy afternoons with family or friends, ur date may not feel romantic here :)
A delux north karanataka meals at about 100rs in this peaceful place is a delight for sure.

Krishna cafe - Bannerghatta road
If you are a veggie and also a tamilian, then Krishna cafe is the best bet u can get in bannerghatta road, bangalore.
Its a simple meals served in banana leaves, dont expect cozy comforts here, just basic table-chair setup with 'get token for meals' set up, no ceramic/chinaclay utensils just our very own stainless steel evey where. Grab your token, get a place, clean the leaf with water as any
other south indian and start having your feast.
The servers in their traditional veshtis / dothis are quite generous in offerin rice :). They have two dry vegetable dishes பொரியல், one kootu கூட்டு [thick gravy made with vegetables and dal]. a good appalam accompanied with மோர்மிளகாய் roasted 'dried chilli soaked in butter milk' accompanies the veg curries along the corner of the banana leaf.
Then comes the main course along with the unlimited rice - you have all choices that are essential for a tamilian feast, sambhar பருப்பு சாம்பார், kaarakkozhambu /vaththakozhambu காரக்குழம்பு, curd curry மோர்க்குழம்பு and rasam. dont miss any of them, plan your rice to
accomodate all four dishes, i swear, they are yummy. you can finish off with curd - curd and rice as a southie or curd with sugar in pure northi style.. the choice is yours, but dont forget they have mouthwatering fresh pickles, so try rice and curd, you will never get dissappointed.
Apart from this regular meals, they have a deluxe meals, it comes with additional pulav வெஜிடபிள் பிரியானி with some fresh chips / varuval வறுவல் (சேனக்கிழங்கு / உருளைக்கிழங்கு).
hey! i forgot to mention the desert, the delicios jaggery payasam. If you more long to get the traditional taste, dont get that in cups, pour them to the curd-rasam sticking banana leaf and take them in your hand.. boss..! its like having a marriage feast in south.. once u finish the meal u tend to hear some gossips, as usually in marriage halls. the food gives the same feel :)
A complete feast for 65/75 Rs... good one.
you can see lot of tamil folks hanging around with vikatans and kalkis.. so there is a chance to stumble upon a tamil belle :) All the best Guys!!

Dosa corner - Jayanagar
being a southindian, i feel its perfect to start this blog with my dosa hunt. :)
Bangalore is really a Dosa paradise, you can step in to any of the Darshinis/sagar over the corner and you can get a decent dosa [i still prefer to call it as dosai]. But still perfect dosa's need a hunting. :)
Dosa corner - a small food joint in Jayanagar 3rd block is a cool place to have perfect Dosas. Its really a small place and you can see crowd spilling all over the pavements during weekend evenings. Lot of maamis and mamasa with their kids along with a huge lot of college goers flock this place.
Its not a pricey glossy place, prices are cheap and dosas are simple. yet yummy!! The bad part here is the crowd, if u want to have a dosa on a saturday evening, you have to wait patiently for atleast 10-15 minitues in Q.
No longer only the traditional potato filling, but of paneer, cauliflower, beetroot, avarekalu, etc are in race with the potato masala dosas. There would be more than 15 stuffings of the choicest
fillings displayed on the menu prominently. They are worth for the 15 mins waiting.
the next time you visit Jayanagar BDA or 4th block for shopping spend some time with those piping hot dosas.
mm.. yeah.. They also serve excellent holiges ( இனிப்பு ஒப்புட்டு)
